The worldwide prominent Gewandhaus Orchestra is the honor of the city of Leipzig. The origin of the concert band began in 1743 when it was just an amateur formation consisted of 16 musicians. The present house of the Leipzig Orchestra was open in October 1981 with the ceremonial show conducted by Kurt Masur who was the director of the symphonic band at that time.

At the foyer, there is an incredible overhead painting “Life’s Song” with 714 sq. m area – it is the largest monumental canvas in Europe.
