Places of Harz that are worth seeing

Those who prefer museums and sights to sauna and spa relaxation will never be bored in the Harz. You can find many cultural attractions in the medieval timbered towns, such as Quedlinburg and Goslar. The travelers can visit the ancient mines, which are the mining museums nowadays, and explore the stalactites caves of Rübeland. There is a unique high-mountain botanical garden Brockengarten, where you can get by a local locomotive. You should also take a ride on the Harzer Schmalspurbahn narrow-gauge railway, running for more than 130 km, which will take you to the highest railway station in Germany – to the Brocken Mountain.

The Harz is a goldmine of the historical attractions.

The Harz is interesting in both winter and summer. It is a place of unique natural reserve: a beautiful combination of mountains, rivers and lakes, primeval forests and wild meadows that became a home for many species of animals. The National Park of Harz occupies about ten percent of the Harz Mountains area – a genuine treasure of Saxony.

However, the Harz is not limited just with its natural wealth. There are several authentic sights, which are included into UNESCO World Heritage: the Collegiate Church of St. Servatius in the old town of Quedlinburg; Lutherstadt Eisleben (the town where Martin Luther was born), the mines of Rammelsberg; the Upper Harz Water Management System; and the town of Goslar.

The historical churches, monasteries, and castles will make you return to the great historical past of the region.

The town of Wernigerode is the most popular spot for tourists in the region. Wernigerode is a truly fabulous place, which is famous for its Town Hall with ornamental decorations, the Wernigerode Castle (founded in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 19th century), and its medieval fantastic houses. This wonderful town proposes a wide variety of hotel accommodation at any taste. The three-, four-, and five-star rating hotels can be found in the town. The prices for the overnight stay start from 65 Euro for two persons.

Wernigerode

At the beginning of autumn, it is worth to visit the town of Seesen, where, on the first Sunday of September, the locals celebrate Sehusa-Fest, the biggest medieval holiday in Germany, where the citizens of the town dress up as knights, princesses, and miners. The tourists have a possibility to observe the knight tournaments, watch the instruments of the medieval tortures, and see the old crafts.

Recreation in the Region

The Harz is the region with plenty things to see and to do. The diversity of recreation possibilities here amazes by its richness. First of all, the Harz is the number one place for long-distance hiking (in any season, actually) with different routes to explore. Take a tour to the highest point of the Harz – the Brocken Mountain, where even Goethe drew inspiration for his great works! Actually, the Mountain also arouses the great interest because of its unusual climate, which corresponds neither the local climate nor the height of the mountain.

However, the most exciting and one of the longest hiking tour (where you cross the Brocken Mountain, the National Park of the Harz, and towns shrouded in mystery) is called Harzer-Hexen-Stieg. The trail stretches from Osterode to Thale – experience the path to explore the enigmatic world of the region.

The legends say about the witches' Sabbath on the Brocken Mountain during Walpurgis nights.

For those who prefer challenging types of activities, we recommend experiencing mountain biking in the Harz. The cyclists note that the local slopes perfectly suit for this kind of sport, where you will find the easy short trails, as well as complicated long tracks, but be sure, the impressions are guaranteed!

Walk the paths of the Grimm brothers’ fairytales at the Märchenwald Park or spend an active day at the Skyrope-Park in Bad Harzburg. In Thale, you can experience the breathtaking ride on the chairlift, and visit the enchanting witch’s house. The Harz is an ideal place for the family holiday where a person of any age can find an interest at his taste.

The Harz in Winter

During the winter season, when the mountains are covered with snow, you can make a cross-country skiing or walk in the woods, or get down the mountains on ski, snowboard, or sled. There are slopes for both professional skiers and beginners, and, moreover, at night, some slopes are illuminated, so you can enjoy skiing day and night. On the top of the hills, there are some restaurants that offer wonderful dishes and snacks together with hot tasty warming beverages for the vacationists.
